Chapter 2: Sending the Message

Under chapter 2 there was a section about developing your own style of writing.  Reading that made me realize that I have never thought about my own style or what I might be more interested in.  There were different options of writing styles like factual over creative or advertising over news writing.  I have never really considered which I would prefer.  I guess all I can do is practice and see which would be in my favor. \

Resumes and cover letters were also mentioned in this chapter.  I actually found that section to be quite helpful.  I have never been coach on how to correctly type out a cover letter or what the purpose of it was.  In the book it says that we can think of the cover letter as “advertisements” for the resume and for our writing style and ability.  I didn’t realize that it’s the cover letter that is really introducing ourselves and the resume is mostly just details and past experience.  The book gave great examples of what a cover letter should look and sound like. type writer

Not a morning person

morning

Sunrise

This semester I have the earliest classes I have taken so far in college.   I’m not usually one to complain, but I know for a fact that I have never been a morning person.  Growing up it was always a struggle for my mom to pull me out of bed for grade school or any other early morning obligation.  I have tried everything from setting 3 different alarms to going to bed extra early to insure that I will wake up on time and in a better mood.  It never fails that I am always crawling out of bed on the last alarm and in a groggy mood.  I guess the one thing about my mornings is that I insure that I am never late.

Not being a morning person is kind of a curse to me.  One reason is because I wish I could actually enjoy that time.  It’s always so peaceful in the morning when no one else is awake and its nice and quiet. Being up before the sun and being able to watch it rise is something I would like to enjoy as well.  I want to be able to push out of the sleepiness and use that time more effectively than just moving around slowly and wishing I was still in bed.  The only thing that has ever worked for me in the morning to snap me out of the haze is coffee.  Coffee is great, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t want to become dependent on it.  I don’t want to wake up and have to get a cup of coffee to be able to function.

So, as  you can see, I am fresh out of ideas of how to become a morning person.

Universal Studios 2013
Orlando Project

Coming into the new semester I have been a little more excited than usual. Although I was sad to see summer end. This summer was probably one of the best summers of my life. I had the opportunity to spend 10 weeks in Orlando, with a campus ministry, working at Universal Studios and growing in my relationship with God. This year I am in more classes that are centered around my major. This year is going to be a great look into the PR field. I will be learning crucial writing skills and other aspects of the PR world. So far during this first week I have already gotten a taste of what this year is going to look like academically.I know I am going to have a full plate seeing how on two days I have four of my most important classes.

I’m trying to see things on the positive side though. This semester will definitely be testing on my time management skills, but I could always use improvement in that anyway. Also, I will be very involved on campus this year with PRSSA and a campus ministry that I am a part of. I can honestly say that I am excited for this semester and have high hopes that it will be one of my best in my college career.

Chapter 1: Theoretical Influences on Public Relations Writing

typingChapter One went over different theories in the public relations and their influences in the field.

Reading over the different theories, one that I found most informative and attention catching was the Systems Theory: Looking at the “Big Picture”. When describing the theory the book gave an analogy of an organism and how it needs to survive. Survival includes: being cared for with the essentials of air, water, and nutrients. To me this was a great way of explaining exactly how an organization is going to be succesful. Just as an organism, an organization needs the same kind of care. The organization needs positive interaction with the publics. Within the public relations there is a link system. This system is what connects the internal relations to the external such as, news media, government, and other outside sources.

Alongside the theories in this chapter there is a section called “Finding Your Niche”

Reading this section made me realize that I don’t really have a main field of public relations that I would like to focus on. Being in publicity would be an interesting career but I think that working in Events would also let me excersie what I enjoy about Public relations. Hopefully by the end of this semester I will have a specific field that I will want to be in.
